Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Kenya Series at SwahiliPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Kenyan holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 9, Boxing Day. In Swahili, it’s called Sikukuu ya kupeana vijisanduku.
Boxing Day is celebrated in Kenya and many other places in the world on December 26, the day after Christmas.
This lesson will highlight how Kenyans celebrate Boxing Day.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question-
What are the most common presents exchanged on Boxing Day in Kenya?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
Boxing Day starts by wrapping gifts, or zawadi, to be given to those who helped you in one way or the other during the year. These people could be colleagues, someone who works in a shop you frequently go to, or any other person who helped when you were in need. Gifts are also given to those less fortunate.
Family members and church members frequently use this day to participate in recreational activities like soccer, or kandanda, and cricket, or kriketi.
If the weather is good, some people go mountain climbing to places like Mount Kenya, or Mlima Kenya. Still others will take things slow, having a nice walk and chat while admiring their surroundings.
Many people choose this day to hold housewarming parties, inviting family and friends into their homes. They usually eat special foods, which often include many of the leftovers from Christmas.
Relatives and friends will usually go shopping after they've eaten and played sports. The new items they purchase are used as gifts, as the theme of this day from morning until evening is “giving” or kupeana and being good Samaritans.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
What are the most common presents exchanged on Boxing Day in Kenya?
The most common gifts given on Boxing Day are things such as clothes, shoes, and electronics.
So, listeners, how was this lesson? Did you learn something interesting?
