INTRODUCTION |
In the last lesson, we learned how to ask how long the bus trip to your destination would take. |
BODY |
You’ll probably want to know where your bus is going, before you get on it. Or you may find yourself wondering whether the bus you’re already in, will stop where you hope it will. Either way, you’ll want to be able to ask “Does this bus go to …[place] ?”: |
Je, basi hili linaenda . .[place] .? |
Just fill in the blank with whatever place you’re going to. Let’s try with one of the most famous Kenyan tourist destinations - Old Town, in the city of Mombasa. |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Je, ba - si hi - li li - na - e - nda Old Town? |
And again at natural speed: |
Je, basi hili linaenda Old Town? |
The first word is je, which makes the question. It implies “does this” |
(slow) je |
je |
Next comes basi, meaning “bus.” |
(slow) basi |
basi |
hili means “this” |
(slow) hili |
hili |
The next word linaenda means “is going to” |
(slow) linaenda |
linaenda |
Then the place where you want to go, in this case “Old Town.” |
Put it all together, and we get |
Je, basi hili linaenda Old Town? |
“Does this bus go to Old Town?” |
(slow) Je, basi hili linaenda Old Town? |
Je, basi hili linaenda Old Town? |
・ |
You may also want to ask what the next stop is. That would be - |
Ni kituo gani kinachofuata? |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Ni ki - tu - o nga - ni ki - na - cho - fu - a - ta? |
And once more: |
Ni kituo ngani kinachofuata? |
ni, as we have seen before, means “is.” |
(slow) ni |
ni |
kituo means “stage.” |
(slow) kituo |
kituo |
gani means “what.” |
gani |
All together these three will mean “what stage” |
The last word, kinachofuata, means “next.” |
kinachofuata |
(slow) kinachofuata |
kinachofuata |
All together, that’s |
Ni kituo ngani kinachofuata? |
(slow) Ni kituo ngani kinachofuata? |
Ni kituo ngani kinachofuata? |
As an answer, you might get: |
Kituo kinachofuata ni Old Town. |
(slow) Kituo kinachofuata ni Old Town. |
Kituo kinachofuata ni Old Town. |
Get ready to hop off if you hear this, because it means |
“The next stop is Old Town. ” |
